Using Your Library

Today’s library is about far more than just books! Explore the technological, entertainment, research, and educational opportunities that are available free from the Mendham Borough Library.

Any person who lives, works, attends school or pays taxes in Mendham Borough may request a library card according to policies set by the Board. The Library is part of the Morris County system (MAIN) and, as such, all cardholders have limited privileges with all other MAIN affiliates. The library affords these same privileges to other MAIN members. There is no age requirement for a library card.

Replacement library cards incur a fine of $3 per card.

Renewals
Materials may be renewed if they have not been requested by another patron. You can renew in person, by logging into your account through the online catalog, or over the phone (973) 543-4152. Items may be returned to any MAIN library.

Loan Periods
Books, audiobooks, videos, DVD’s, and magazines may be borrowed from the Library.

  • Books – 2 weeks.
  • Audiobooks – 2 weeks.
  • DVDs – 7 days.
  • TV series – 14 days.
  • Magazines – 1 week.
  • Kindles – 2 weeks.

Fines

  • Overdue books, audiobooks, and magazines will incur a late fine of 15 cents per day, with a maximum fine of $5.
  • Overdue DVDs will incur a late fine of $1 per day.
  • Replacement library cards incur a fine of $3 per card.
  • Kindles will incur a late fine of $2 per day and a $300 replacement cost.
  • Launchpads will incur a late fine of $1 day and a $165 replacement cost.
  • Read-Along Books will incur a late fine of 15 cents per day with a $45-$65 replacement cost.

Kindle Readers are available to check out from our library for 2 weeks (no renewals). Each Kindle is preloaded with best-sellers and great new books are added each month. Please return Kindles inside the library at the circulation desk.

Homebound Services
Libraries-by-Mail Libraries-by-Mail provides books directly to Morris County residents at their homes. The program is free of cost and easy to use. Books are mailed to the home address given and return postage is included with the shipment.

Mendham Borough Library has a staff member who is a Notary Public.
The service is free but please call ahead 973-543-4152

Notary services are performed free of charge.

Library Notaries witness a patron signing a document or signing a sworn statement on a document. The Library Notary documents that:

  • The signer of the document appeared before the Notary.
  • The Notary positively identified the signer; and
  • The signer both acknowledged the signature as hers or his, and that the signature was made willingly.

The following guidelines will be followed in the provision of Notary Service:

  • The person who will sign the document must be sure that the document is completely filled out, leaving no blanks other than where the customer will sign the document, before appearing before the Library Notary. Library Notaries may not notarize any document with blank spaces.
  • Notary service is on a first come first served basis.
  • Government issued photo identification is required of any patron seeking Notary service.
  • The Library will not provide witnesses and witnesses may not be solicited from other patrons of the Library.
  • Documents in any language other than English will not be notarized.
  • New Jersey law requires that a Notary and the patron seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other. Library Notaries are not permitted to make use of a translator to communicate with a Notary service customer.
  • In accordance with New Jersey Notarial Law, Notaries will not provide service if the patron, document or circumstances of the request for Notary service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt or uncertainty for the Library. In this event, the Library Notary may, at his/her sole discretion, decline to provide Notary service.
  • The Library Notary does not provide Notary service for Wills.

WiFi Access
Free wireless Internet access for your notebook, laptop, or PDA is available throughout the library whenever the library is open. Wireless users must comply with the library’s Internet Policy.

Computers
The Library has computers for public use with MS Office.

Black & White copies – $0.10 per page.

Fax
$1.00 Per page.

Groups are welcome to utilize our meeting room during library hours. Please contact the director at 973-543-4152 to schedule the date and time.

Archive Room
The Mendham Borough Archives Room includes a collection of handwritten ledgers from the 1800’s documenting Mendham’s early lifestyle, photos from the late 1800’s, out-of-print books on local history, genealogy files, numerous albums and files containing old newspaper clippings about local people and events.
Access to the Archives Room is available by appointment during library hours.

Rules of Conduct for Library Visitors

1. Purpose: The Mendham Borough Library is dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all library patrons and staff. We have established this Behavior Policy/Code of Conduct to ensure that our patrons can use the library’s facilities, resources, materials, programs and services without being disturbed or impeded and to ensure that our patrons and staff can use the library in a secure and comfortable environment. These Rules of Conduct apply to all library property, including outside areas and parking lots.

2. Overview: No individual may engage in inappropriate conduct on the premises of the Mendham Borough Library. Patrons shall be engaged in the normal activities associated with the use of a public library while on the premises at all times. Depending upon the circumstances or nature of the inappropriate conduct, individuals may suffer a loss or suspension of privileges and face civil or criminal prosecution.

3. Definition of Inappropriate Conduct: Inappropriate conduct includes any individual or group actions in the library or on library premises that interfere with the use of library facilities, collections, services, or programs by others or disrupts the ability of library staff to perform their duties. Inappropriate conduct is not permitted at any time and any patron engaging in same shall cease such activity immediately upon request of library staff.

4. Authority of Library Staff: The library staff has the authority to maintain order to ensure the safety of patrons and staff and to maintain a pleasant library experience. All patrons must follow the directions of the staff regarding this policy. Conduct may be deemed inappropriate regardless of whether it rises to the level of criminal activity.

5. Consequences of Violation of Policy: Violation of these rules may result in a temporary or permanent loss of the use of library facilities. Continued or severe inappropriate behavior will lead to expulsion from the library, parental notification if a minor, and possible police notification, or prosecution as warranted.

Inappropriate conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Engaging in any activity that constitutes violation of Federal, State or municipal criminal statutes or ordinances;
  • Displaying or using any dangerous weapon on library property or using or threatening the use of any object in such a manner that it may be considered a weapon (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4);
  • Engaging in or threatening to engage in any fighting, striking, kicking, shoving or other physically intimidating or assaultive behavior (N.J.S.A. 2C: 33-4);
  • Possessing, selling, distributing, consuming or being under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or illegal drug or controlled substance (N.J.S.A. 2C: 35-24);
  • Trespassing by entering or remaining on library property after having been notified by an authorized individual not to do so, including entering or remaining on library property after having been instructed to leave;
  • Refusing to follow the directions of library staff;
  • Leaving children or adults who need supervision unattended;
  • Engaging in any behavior that is disruptive, harassing or threatening to library users or staff annoys or disturbs other patrons (N.J.S.A. 2C: 33-4);
  • Engages in disorderly conduct, including the use of offensive language (N.J.S.A. 2C: 33-2);
  • Creating disruptive noise levels including loud talking, shouting, loud or repeated cell phone ringing or cell phone conversations (silent mode and texting are permitted) or using other personal electronic equipment at a volume that is disturbing to other patrons;
  • Blocking the entrance to the library or using skateboards, rollerblades, skate shoes, scooters, bicycles, or hoverboards within the library or on library property in a manner that is disruptive to others or damages property;
  • Engaging in any lewd or sexual contact, activity or conduct; (N.J.S.A. 2C: 33-4);
  • Smoking or using other tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, or vaping;
  • No food is allowed in the library except when it is expressly a part of library program;
  • Prolonged sleeping that interferes with the use and enjoyment of the library by others;
  • Appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes, must be worn at all times;
  • Monopolizing library resources or staff time;
  • Theft of library materials, furniture, equipment or services; (N.J.S.A. 2C: 20-12);
  • Damaging or vandalizing library property, including, but not limited to, restrooms, computers, electronic equipment, hardware or software, furniture and walls; defacing or removing pages from books; or, destroying landscaping or other fixtures; (N.J.S.A. 2C: 17-3);
  • Moving furniture without the express consent of library staff or using furniture in any manner that may damage the furniture, including placing feet on same;
  • Bringing any animal into the library except service animals and animals brought into the library in connection with library programs;
  • Entering non-public areas of the library without permission;
  • Taking library materials into restrooms (N.J.S.A. 2C: 20-12);
  • Vandalizing cars or other property/items in the library parking lot or anywhere else on library property (N.J.S.A. 2C: 17-3);
  • Violating the library’s rules for acceptable use of computers and the internet. A user accepts these rules before accessing the Internet through a library computer. Copies of these rules will be made available by staff upon request.
