Mendham Borough’s library has existed in various forms since 1797. A Mendham Library Company operated for most of the 19th century until it faded from existence. In 1911 The Literary Club formed the Mendham Library Association and housed a collection built from private donations in St. Mark’s parish house. Memberships were available for a dollar with an additional lending fee of twenty-five cents per book. About the same time a group called the “Book and Thimble Club” dedicated itself to maintaining the library. At their meetings, one member would read aloud while the others sewed articles for the annual fund-raising bazaar.
In 1931, the library moved to a small building behind Robinson’s Drug Store and in 1932 took possession of its new home at 10 Hilltop Road. Mrs. Louise Forsythe Demarest had left moneys in her will for the construction and maintenance of this building. Forty-six years later, in 1978, the building doubled in size thanks to gifts from Andrew Fletcher, longtime board member and former mayor.
From its beginnings the library served all the citizens of Mendham. Only in 1947 did a formal organization begin in Mendham Township. Since then there have been several efforts to merge the two organizations. Meanwhile, Mendham Borough Library, despite physical and financial constraints, strives to present top quality collections, programs and services.

Who We Are
The Friends of the Mendham Borough Library is a long-standing group of community members, who donate their time to help the Library achieve its goal of being a vibrant and dynamic part of the community.
Why the Library Needs Friends
The Mendham Borough Library is a cherished community treasure, but it is not a municipal institution, meaning it is not fully funded by tax dollars. While we receive valuable support from the Borough, this funding is not guaranteed and can vary each year. To bridge the gap, we rely heavily on donor contributions.
The Friends of the Library are a crucial part of sustaining the Library’s mission. Whether it is running a book sale or creating silent auction baskets, the Friends play a vital role in the success of the Library’s fundraisers. They also show appreciation for our dedicated staff and volunteers through special luncheons and actively promote community engagement and awareness.
How You Can Help
The Friends of the Mendham Borough Library are looking for new members interested in…
- Assisting with fundraising events that raise money essential for the Library.
- Building community awareness about the amazing services the Library has to offer.
- Celebrating the Library staff and volunteers through special luncheons.
Whatever your talent or skill, the Library could use your support!

A Look at the Past
Mendham Borough has been fortunate to maintain a public library since 1797 demonstrating the community’s enduring commitment to literacy. What began as the Mendham Library Company evolved into The Literary Club and later the Book and Thimble Club. The Book and Thimble Club was so named because a member of the club would read while others would sew items for a yearly bazaar that funded the Library’s collections.
Today, the Friends of the Mendham Borough Library carry on this legacy. Like the Book and Thimble Club before them, they provide important fundraising assistance, promote community engagement, and honor our dedicated staff.
Join the Friends and help keep Mendham’s rich tradition of library support alive! Volunteers are always needed, so please contact the Library to become involved.
